LONG BIOGRAPHY

 

LINDSEY SCHUST is a composer, singer-songwriter, pianist and percussionist from rural New Hampshire.  Lindsey’s music reflects a kaleidoscope of musical traditions. When you listen to her songs, you can hear echoes of African Drumming, Classical composition, Latin percussion, choral singing, country music, and folk music.  

 

Her first Spanish Album, “Dónde Está mi corazón”, was inspired by Afro-Cuban rhythms and a Tufts University tour to Cuba in 2003.  The album received radio play and charted on programs like Latin Train and Orígenes (University of Ottawa’s CHUO” 89.1FM) and Rumba y Son a popular program on Radio Planicie in Lima Peru. Her song “Café Con leche” won an award in the Global Rhythm Magazine (now Relix) songwriting competition in December 2006.  Her track “Mama Lele” was nominated for a “Just Plain Folks” Independent Music Award in 2009.

 

Since 2011, Lindsey has moved into country, folk, Americana fusion. She now directs her family band (Lindsey Schust & the Ragged Mountain Band), and writes songs in a variety of genres and writes instrumental music. She also films and edits music videos with the community. Her first music video (the “Offical Hippie Hill Music Video”) can be seen on YouTube. Her next video “Country Way” will be coming out later this year. 

 

Lindsey co-directs of the Songweavers Drumming Ensemble, with Grace Schust, at the Concord Community Music School, in Concord NH. Lindsey and Grace, also known as the “Timbre Drum Ensemble”, team-teach drum, dance and song workshops and classes throughout New England.  Lindsey and Grace are members of the New Hampshire Council on the Arts’ Artists Roster.

 

Since 1990, Lindsey has studied with African and Afro-Caribbean master drummers from Mali, Nigeria, Guinea, Senegal, Ghana, Trinidad, Haiti and Cuba.  Her primary teachers include master drummers: Babatunde Olatunji, Sikiru Adepoju, Joe Galeota, Abdoul Doumbia, Issa Coulibaly and Jacinto Herrera.  In addition, she has studied classical new music composition with composers David Rakowski, Yehudi Wyner, and John McDonald. Lindsey graduated cum laude from Brandeis with a degree in music and received her Master’s degree in music composition from Tufts University.

Lindsey’s upcoming album Country Way, will be released online on May 20, 2022. It features master fiddler Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki, and Grammy award winner & master of the “talking drum” Sikiru Adepoju, along with Grace Schust, Jim Schust, Robert Grasmere, Paul Currier, Jim Connell, , Tim Gilmore, Luke Dobrowski, and Jimmy Sferes & Jennifer White.
